2009-05-05 00:00

Former Health MEC Peggy Nkonyeni will be the Speaker in the KZN Legislature, the ANC’s Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) announced yesterday ahead of the swearing-in of all parliamentarians today. Her deputy speaker will be the former Agriculture MEC Mtholephi Mthimkhulu.

In the KZN Legislature members who will represent KZN in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) will also be chosen today. The ANC’s PEC announced three of its representatives. They are Lewis Nzimande, Dumisani Gamede and Thandi Memela, who is chairwoman of the Veterans League in KZN. The fourth is to be announced shortly.

The morning’s proceedings will conclude shortly after the different parties make their remarks.

Party representation in the KZN Legislature is the ANC with 51 seats, the IFP with 18, the DA with seven, the Minority Front with two and ACDP and Cope with one each.

The next highlight on the legislature calendar is Inauguration Day on Monday, May 11, when Mkhize will be formally sworn in as premier of the province before making his acceptance speech and announcing his cabinet.
