No major damage in Howick

2009-01-05 00:00

Apart from trees falling onto roads and a few houses being damaged, there was no major storm damage reported in the Howick area.

Jerome Nzimande, the head of protection services at the uMngeni Municipality, told The Witness yesterday that the municipality’s disaster management unit had received reports of only three houses being damaged in Howick and surrounding areas.

These included a house in Hilton’s Hillary Road, which had its roof blown off. Nzimande said the municipality was yesterday still trying to track down the owner of that house. Other houses that were reported damaged included a house in Chief Mkhize’s kraal near kwaHhaza in Howick and another house at D Side farm.

“Fortunately for this municipality there seem to be less damage caused to houses. Most of the damage we saw was of the trees falling onto roads and these are being cleared … ” he said.

He said storm damage reported at this stage is estimated at less than R50 000.
