No money to repair municipal homes

2012-10-03 00:00

MSUNDUZI Municipality’s stock of rental houses was poorly kept because there was no money for maintenance due to an outstanding rental debt of over R21 million.

Certain buildings had also not been maintained because the plots had been earmarked for other projects, the manager of the municipality’s Housing Delivery Unit, Radha Gounden, said at the city’s housing summit on Monday.

Gounden was asked by DA councillor Vic Winterbach why many council-owned buildings around the city were poorly maintained.

He replied said the debt dated to 2000 when tenants were involved in a rent dispute with the municipality. The matter had gone before the rental tribunal, where the dispute dragged on for close to 10 years before being withdrawn by the tenants.

However, many had not paid their rent in that time. Gounden said the municipality was working on recouping the money.

He added that there were properties the municipality had bought with future projects in mind, for example the need to widen a road.

These buildings were to be demolished and were therefore not maintained.

Tenants were made aware that they would have to move out when the properties were needed by the municipality.
