No new sinkhole or deeper dip on N3 as twits claim

2015-04-23 00:00

LOCALS took to social media this week to voice their concern about the possibility of a sinkhole on the N3, Durban bound, repaired a few weeks ago, making a reappearance.

However, the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) project manager Ravi Ronny said on Tuesday there was no dip in the road where the sinkhole had been repaired.

Ronny said the hole on the N3 was caused by a pipe failure and the settlement of the layers above and although repaired urgently, the workmanship was to the required standard.

“The adjacent lanes also had settled from the pipe settlement at the time when the original hole had formed. The dip in all three of the southbound carriageway lanes is being monitored and in the two weeks since the repair there has been no further settlement.”

He said the temporary closure of the lanes was planned a week ago with the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI).

He said drilling was to have started on Tuesday to help determine the extent of the settlement as well as to fill any voids adjacent to the pipe and repair the top of the existing pipe.

“This is the initial repair to stop any chance of settlement.

“The final repairs will be completed in the following months as the original pipe will be concreted up and a new concrete pipe jacked underneath the N3.”

He said once the initial repairs were completed the surface would be repaired temporarily with asphalt.

“The final surface repair will be completed within the next year by the contractor currently on site to rehabilitate the N3 from Sanctuary road to Cedara Interchange,” said Ronny.
