No place left to hide

Women who’ve been disappointed in love, no longer have to be satisfied only with bitching about him to their friends — now they can put his name, picture and transgressions on the Internet for thousands of others to see.

Website www.donotdatehim.co.za (DNDH), where SA women can warn others against “cheaters and abusers”, was launched on August 18.

By this Wednesday, DNDH had more than 450 registered users and 22 men on the so-called “loser listings”.

There were pictures of some of the men and the areas in which they lived were mentioned. Users could comment.

Yolandi van Rooyen, 28, from Pretoria, who is also the webmaster, started the site. She said she’d been in an abusive relationship a few years ago.

“I then read in a magazine about a similar American website and decided to start a local version. It is to empower women — it’s time that we stand up to abusers.”

On the homepage, Van Rooyen says she is not a man-hater.

“There are of course several good ones out there, but one first has to get rid of the bad apples.

This site aims to expose such men for the bad-mannered, chauvinistic pigs that they are.”

According to her, the feedback has been overwhelming and was more positive than not.

“Especially in the past two weeks, I have hardly been able to deal with all the reaction. There are also several men who have said they supported the initiative.

“The aim is not for the website to be about mudslinging …”

According to her, the identity of subscribers and those who made submissions, were kept secret.

Before users could put up information about a man, they had to commit themselves to the rules and regulations of the website.

These specify, among others, that no racist, obscene of sexually explicit language is used.
