‘No such thing as a friendly’ — Masango

2011-07-14 00:00

JOHANNESBURG — Mandla Masango can’t wait to mix it up with Tottenham in the Vodacom Challenge after his successful campaign with the South Africa U23s.

The midfielder was part of the Amaglug-glug outfit which beat Zimbabwe 2-1 on aggregate to qualify for the All Africa Games and is grateful Chiefs coach Vladimir Vermezovic gave him a week off to keep him fresh for the Spurs clash.

He told the club’s official website: “It was good planning on the part of the coach to have allowed me to have last week off. I was active with the national U23’s when most of the other guys were on holiday.

“I am grateful to the coach for understanding that I needed a rest and for affording me the chance to do so.”

Amakhosi will meet Spurs on Saturday at the Peter Mokaba Stadium and Masango is relishing the opportunity to measure himself against Premier League opposition.

He continued: “This is an important game for us against Spurs, we get to face them in a competitive setting and it will be a useful test for us.

“There is no such a thing as a friendly game for us, Spurs would not want to be shown up by us and we want to kick off our season on a winning note so there is everything to play for.

“This is going to be my third Vodacom Challenge, I was fortunate enough to win the tournament in 2009 and I know that it does a lot for our confidence if we manage to pick up silverware early in the season.

“We have players who have been playing in international matches regularly for their national team’s, I do feel that experience will help us when we face Spurs on Saturday. The technical team has been thorough with our preparations which will definitely be an added advantage for us on Saturday.”
