‘No work, no pay’ — Haswell

2009-07-24 00:00

“THE no work, no pay policy will be applied to employees who do not sign on and work,” said Msunduzi municipal manager Rob Haswell referring to the union strike set for this coming Monday.

Although members of the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) and the Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union (Imatu) will strike nationally due to unsettled disagreements over wages, Haswell said those employed by essential service departments will not be allowed to take part in strike action as this is against the law.

He said those working for electricity, fire, water and sewerage disposal, health and traffic and security will be expected to report for duty.

With the support of external security, the municipality will ensure their safety and see to the protection of municipal property, said Haswell.

He said the municipality has contingency measures in place to make sure that essential services are carried out without hindrance. “We apologise in advance for any inconvenience that may well arise, and will be monitoring the situation closely. We trust that the action will be orderly, and that the dispute will be speedily resolved at national level,” said Haswell.
