Nombuso trial date set

The man charged with last year’s kidnapping, rape and murder of nine-year-old Howick scholar Nombuso Nhlangulela, which sent shock waves through the local community, is due to go on trial in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on March 9 — just over a year after he allegedly committed the crimes.

Little Nombuso disappeared from outside Howick Secondary School on Thursday, February 28, last year, and her body was found bound to a tree in Howick on Monday, March 3.

It is alleged that her assailant had tied her to the tree next to the road in the early hours of that morning and placed a plastic bag over her head, which made it impossible for her to breathe. She allegedly died of suffocation.

The office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in KwaZulu-Natal has charged Faizel Mohamed Sayed (35) of Valley View Road in Howick West, with her kidnapping, two counts of rape and murder, as well as 28 other charges relating to attacks on nine other teenagers and young women.

He faces a total of five counts of kidnapping, 19 of rape, one of attempted rape, one of murder and three counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances.

The attacks on the other victims allegedly occurred after Nombuso’s murder between April 26 and June 21 last year.

According to the state’s indictment, Sayed was allegedly in the company of others on occasions when he accosted some of his victims. The state alleges that Nombuso — a pupil at Howick West Primary School — had been waiting at Howick Secondary School to meet other pupils after classes on the fateful day when she decided to go to a nearby tuck- shop.

While she was on her way to the tuckshop, Sayed allegedly accosted her, forced her to go with him and kept her prisoner for a number of days “at a place or places to the prosecution unknown”.

During this time he allegedly raped her twice.

•On Saturday, April 26, Sayed was allegedly travelling in a motor vehicle with others when they came across a 15-year-old girl on her way to the public library in Pietermaritzburg. It is alleged they forced the girl into the vehicle and drove away. A distance further on Sayed allegedly alighted, taking the teenager with him, led her to an isolated spot and raped her twice.

•On Monday, April 28, Sayed allegedly accosted a 17-year-old girl in Pietermaritzburg on a pretext of offering her part-time employment. He allegedly took her to a secluded spot and raped her twice.

•On Sunday, May 11, the state alleges a 13-year-old complainant was at her home in Pietermaritzburg’s central business district, when Sayed approached her and pretended he wanted her to sell airtime on his behalf. After leading her to a deserted place he allegedly raped her twice.

•On Monday, May 19, a 21-year-old complainant allegedly came to Pietermaritzburg’s CBD seeking work. Sayed allegedly accosted her, promising to provide her with employment, took her to a deserted place and raped her.

•On Friday, May 23, Sayed allegedly waylaid a 19-year-old woman in the CBD. After forcing her to accompany him at knifepoint he allegedly raped her and stole her handbag and clothing.

•On Sunday, June 1, the state alleges that Sayed — again in the company of others in a vehicle — approached a 13-year-old girl in the CBD and forced her into the vehicle. Sayed and the girl allegedly disembarked and the girl was raped twice.

•On Saturday, June 7, Sayed allegedly duped a 21-year-old woman into going with him on the pretext that he had work for her, and then raped her.

•On Monday, June 16, Sayed allegedly encountered an 18-year-old woman in Pietermaritzburg and persuaded her to go with him. At a deserted place, according to the charge sheet, he raped her five times. He allegedly also stole cash, clothing and her handbag.

•On Saturday, June 21, it is alleged that Sayed met a 17-year-old woman in the city and asked her to accompany him so that he could provide her with employment.

The state alleges that the victim did not want to go any further with Sayed, who then produced a firearm. He allegedly raped her once and while he allegedly attempted to rape her, he was again disturbed by passers-by. He fled after robbing her of a cellphone and clothing.
