North West to challenge UKZN Impi for Varsity Shield status

2012-07-26 00:00

THE University of North West (Vaal Triangle) will challenge the Maritzburg campus-based UKZN Impi for their Varsity Shield status at 3 pm on Saturday on the Peter Booysen Sports Park rugby stadium off Golf Road.

It is a match that the local lads simply have to win for the greater good of Maritzburg rugby, and the all support in the KZN capital is requested.

The UKZN Impi had a disappointing 2012 Varsity Shield, characterised by a series of narrow losses, including two heart-breaking, last-minute defeats to eventual winners Wits University.

There is such a fine line between success and failure and Wits go into the top echelon Varsity Cup in 2013, while UKZN face the prospect of at least two years in the wilderness should they lose.

With head coach Beans Bateman and captain Leon Stevens at the helm, the 2011 UKZN Impi enjoyed good periods of play and were a side determined to play positive rugby.

Opponents adept at feeding off mistakes were able to capitalise.

The UKZN players, having learnt from the experience of the campaign, have made progress. Under the guidance of head coach Shawn van Rensburg and Stevens, with Dylan Campbell still the assistant coach, Varsity are destined to finish an impressive fourth in the KZN Premier Division.

UKZN Impi face a competitive NWU Vaal team, who are currently lying tied fifth in a combined league featuring the best 15 clubs in the Gauteng Lions, Valke and North-West Leopards regions.

NWU Vaal recently won the University Sport South Africa qualification tournament in Johannesburg, seeing off the likes of Rhodes University.

Three flat screen TVs at the Varsity stadium clubhouse will ensure everyone can watch the Sharks Super Rugby semi-final after the match.
