North coast holds first by-election

2011-09-07 00:00

THE Mhlabuyalingana municipality on the north coast today holds a by-election to replace a deceased councillor.

This is the first by-election in the province since the May 18 local government elections.

According to KZN spokesperson for the Independent Electoral Commission, Thabani Ngwira, ANC councillor Sbonelo Nhlakanipho Tembe and the IFP’s Almon Magwaza are the only candidates whom voters can vote for to represent this ward.

The election will take place at two voting stations at KwaMasondo, Sizamnqubeko and Manguzi Primary School.

Meanwhile, Ngwira said November 9 is the date set for another by-election in the uMtshezi Municipality in Estcourt, following the resignation of an IFP councillor, Shaka Chonco, earlier last month.

Chonco’s resignation caused an uproar, with the IFP leader Mthembeni Majola accusing him of being “bribed by the ANC to give it an advantage in numbers as no party received an absolute majority during the elections”.

Chonco saying he resigned because of harassment and threats on his life — allegedly made by his own party, the IFP.
