Northdale taxi hits car: five badly hurt

2010-10-21 00:00

ANGRY Northdale residents blamed a taxi driver’s recklessness for an accident in Bombay Road that left five people seriously injured yesterday.

An eyewitness who wished to remain anonymous said: “The taxi driver, who had been travelling towards town, was trying to overtake a VW Caddy driven by a woman. She had been trying to turn into Lotus Road when the speeding taxi bumped into her.”

The witness said the woman’s vehicle hit the kerb and a lamp post before it stopped, while the taxi hit the pavement and overturned, injuring the passengers inside.

Netcare 911’s Jeff Wicks said five seriously injured people were taken to Northdale hospital.

The vice chairperson of the Northern Suburbs Taxi Association, Vinesh Singh, said: “We have been out to the accident site with executive members of the association and we have suspended the driver until the outcome of the case.”

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said police have opened a case of reckless and negligent driving.

The road was closed for about an hour.
