Northwood defend indoor hockey title

2013-09-19 00:00

NORTHWOOD School’s first hockey team reaffirmed their position as the best in the province when they defended their KZN Indoor League crown with a narrow 4-3 win against Westville Boys’ High School.

With Westville 3-1 ahead going into the final 10 minutes, it looked as if Northwood had let matters slip and had to settle for second best, thereby surrendering their title.

But, the Durban North outfit dug deep to net the winner in the final three minutes of the match.

Starting strongly, Northwood strung together a period of brilliant, passing hockey but could only capitalise once, when Steve McManus found the net.

Westville responded and then enjoyed their own dominance to add a second before the break for a 2-1 lead at the change.

A well-worked penalty corner from Westville saw them extend their lead to 3-1 with Northwood having all the work to do.

And work they did. Suddenly spurred into action as Westville kept finding goal, they responded, Greg Wright leading the charge when he turned over the ball and displayed some individual brilliance to evade two defenders and set up McManus for his second goal.

Having pulled one goal back, Northwood applied pressure, are were rewarded with a penalty corner when Matthew de Sousa was fouled. From the corner, Tylo Remke slammed home and with the scores level, it was game on.

Remke proved the hero, providing a moment of rare brilliance when he took the ball and ran through the entire Westville defence, rounding the keeper and rolling the ball into the net.

With minutes left for Westville to claw their way back into the game, Northwood defended with fierce determination, seeing out time and reclaiming their indoor title.

This result saw Northwood close a superb indoor and outdoor hockey season where they proudly confirmed their spot as the best on offer in the province.

In an earlier match, Northwood’s second team beat a young Kearsney first team 6-2 in a promotion-relegation clash. The result means Northwood’s seond team remain in the KZN Indoor League A section, the only second team in the league, for the second consecutive year.
