Not a bad four days for SA swimming as Short Course Champs end

2009-08-11 00:00

NEIL Versfeld broke the South African 200 m breaststroke record by a hefty 1,90 seconds on the fourth and final day of the Telkom SA National Short Course Championships at the G.C. Jolliffe Swimming Pool in Pietermaritzburg yesterday.

NCAA champion Versfeld hauled in William Diering’s national mark of 2:06,78 and sliced 1,90 secs off it to win in 2:04,88. Diering finished in 2:07,51.

The women’s 100 m breaststroke saw Keri Plumstead pushing Ronwyn Roper all the way, an exciting race that saw Roper flash home in 1:08,90 to win by 0,22 secs.

The powerful Lyndon Ferns swam with confidence and authority in the men’s 100 m freestyle final to win in 46,88 secs from Hermanus Botha.

Roland Schoeman opted not to compete in the 100 m freestyle final.

Schoeman smashed the world 50 m freestyle record amid two hours of mayhem on Saturday night, during which Cameron van der Burgh broke his own 50 m and 100 m breaststroke world records either side of the blonde Schoeman.

Another Olympic gold medallist, Pietermaritzburg-raised Darian Townsend, won the men’s 200 m individual medley in 1:53,22 by a country mile from Jay-Cee Thompson in second place in 2:0,48.

The 31-year-old Mandy Loots, quite categorically the best female swimmer here, made it three SA titles for the afternoon with the 200 m backstroke.

Four world records with one broken twice, which has never been done in South Africa before. Not a bad four days for SA swimming at all.
