Not very gripping stuff

BOOK REVIEW

Black Man’s Medicine

Muzi Khuzwayo

Jacana

THE book, Black Man’s Medicine by Muzi Khuzwayo, tackles a very thorny topic among black people, which they’d rather acknowledge among themselves, but never want out in public — African people’s dependence on whites to get things done.

Khuzwayo couches the whole debate in a Sotho saying: “The white person is the black person’s cure.” I was excited to review the book after reading its description on the back cover. I couldn’t wait to get home and get immersed in it.

Imagine my disappointment when I couldn’t read past page 10. The information, as described by the brief on the back cover, promises gripping stuff, but the way the story is told is not. I felt like I was back at university listening to a lecture.
