Nquthu: boys questioned over rape

2012-05-09 00:00

TWO boys have been taken in for questioning in Nquthu in northern KwaZulu-Natal after six pupils at their school allegedly raped a 10-year-old boy, police said yesterday.

The alleged incident happened on Friday.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Vincent Mdunge said: “It’s alleged that boys committed this offence outside the school, in the community,” he said.

Education Department spokesperson Sihle Mlotshwa said the incident had not happened in the school grounds, as was reported in the media, and that community leaders would help police.

The MEC for Social Development, Weziwe Thusi, said she was worried about the spate of child rapes reported in the province over the past week.

“We are greatly concerned,” she said. “This spate of rapes cannot be acceptable and is abhorrent.

“As communities we must stand up and protect the vulnerable from being victims of abuse. All those who are responsible for the wellbeing of children should ensure that they are protected and receive the necessary care and support should they happen to fall victim to abuse.”
