Nudists to wait a month for decision on beach

IT will be a while still before nudists hear if they will have permission to go naked at a KZN beach.

At yesterday’s full Hibiscus Coast Municipal Council meeting (HCM), the SA National Naturist Association (Sanna) heard that they will have to wait another month to hear the council’s decision on their application to turn Mpenjati beach in Trafalgar into a nudist venue.

HCM municipal manager Max Mbili said the decision will be announced on October 28.

Municipal head of community services Sibisiso Nzimande said they await comments from the KZN Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, and the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (Wessa). “Once we have their comments, we will submit this item to the council to consider and take an informed decision,” said Nzimande.

Sanna chairperson Athol Lutge said their application is based on their research, which shows that a naturist beach will boost tourism and the local economy by attracting international tourists to the coast.

“The economic spin-off is huge. Sanna is a member of the International Naturist Federation (INF) which has more than 30 national naturist federations who in turn represents hundreds of millions of naturists and through our networks, we have access to all those naturists worldwide for marketing purposes that would obviously benefit the proposed naturist-friendly beach at Mpenjati,” said Lutge.

Hibiscus mayor Cynthia Mqwebu stressed that this was a sensitive issue and that they need to get comments from all relevant stakeholders.
