Numbers give Hilton the edge over Michaelhouse

2013-04-27 00:00

THERE are four school hockey matches this morning with some interesting contests taking place.

Maritzburg College, for so many years the top hockey school in the province, are not having it all their own way this year and they travel to Durban to take on Northwood.

The Durban North side, coached by College Old Boy Darryn Gallagher, have risen to the top in the province at this stage with some impressive results.

Northwood have won all 11 matches played, while College have won five of their eight matches with two losses and a draw.

The only school that both teams have played is top English school Millfield. Northwood won 3-1 and College 3-0, which shows today’s result is likely to be close.

The big game in the Midlands is the clash on Beckinghams, where home side Hilton will host rivals Michaelhouse.

Last year the two games between the two Independent schools were each won by the side playing at home, which makes Hilton the favourites. On results thus far, Hilton must also be the favourite as they have won three of their six games.

Michaelhouse have played seven games, but only won once.

At this early stage of the season, the two teams have played five common opponents and the results again point to Hilton winning.

Against Jeppe both lost, Hilton 2-3 and Michaelhouse 0-1.

Against St Andrews from Bloemfontein both won, Hilton 4-0 and Michaelhouse 2-1.

Hilton drew 1-1 against Grey HS and Michaelhouse lost 0-1.

Hilton beat KES 5-3, while Michaelhouse drew 1-1, and both lost against Northwood — Hilton 0-3 and Michaelhouse 2-5.

Westville, after a very good performance against Pretoria BHS, will face DHS on the Riverside surface.

Little is known of the Durban side as they have only played the one Saturday game, losing 1-5 against St Andrews College from Grahamstown. Westville will have their tails up and hope to win their sixth of nine matches played.

St Charles host Kearsney in another tight game. The vitors will be disappointed with their season having only won three of their eight games, all against second tier opposition. They have lost both KZN games against Northwood and Glenwood. St Charles have also lost both matches against Westville and Maritzburg College.

FIXTURES

Northwood v Maritzburg College; Hilton v Michaelhouse; DHS v Westville; St Charles v Kearsney
