Nursery’s office ‘fines’ help the SPCA

2013-12-20 00:00

STAFF at a nursery in Ixopo suffered “fines” for office offences throughout the year — for everything from wasting paper to incorrect invoices — all for a good cause.

Yesterday, it emerged that the fine system was a new and innovative way to raise funds for Christmas goodie bags for various charities.

Zandra Pretorius, the administrative manager for Sutherland Seedlings, came up with the fine system three years ago to minimise the offences that happened in the office.

“Normally, we use the money to buy a Christmas cake for everyone to enjoy, but this year I decided to use the money for the SPCA,” Pretorius told The Witness.

The fines only brought in R244, but that did not stop Pretorius from going above and beyond to aid helpless animals she feels so passionately for.

She enlisted the help of a popular wholesale store, who donated 80 kg of dog food.

“I wrote on [the wholesalers’] Facebook page explaining the situation and asking them if I could please get a discount. They called me back and said they would donate 10 bags of dog food. I couldn’t believe it.”

Pretorius then used the money she raised to purchase 30 kg of cat food. All the food was donated to the Pietermaritzburg SPCA.

Ronnie Yoeman, kennel manager of the SPCA, was over the moon by the generous contribution.

“Having extra food is a blessing, which we desperately need. Now we can keep dogs for longer as we have sufficient food.”

Yoeman added that many people forget about the animals, saying they are “last on everyone’s list” during the festive season.
