BUSINESSMAN, educationist and author Dr Mandla Mncwabe died suddenly in Pietermaritzburg on Monday, eight days before his 55th birthday.

Mncwabe served as a vice-rector in charge of academic affairs and research at the University of Zululand. He was the regional director of Technikon South Africa before joining the staff of Umgeni Water where he was initially the Human Resources Manager.

Mncwabe moved on to take charge of training and development and served as the head of the Umgeni Water Training Institute in Durban Heights.

A spokesperson for the water utility, Shami Harichunder, paid tribute to Mncwabe yesterday, describing him as a valuable member of the staff who made a significant contribution to the development of the company.

Harichunder expressed his condolences to the family and said Mncwabe will be fondly remembered by all who knew him at Umgeni.

Mncwabe wrote a number of papers on education and training as well as three books.

Two of his books were published in South Africa, and a third, entitled Post-Apartheid Education: Towards Non-racial Unitary and Democratic Socialization in the New South Africa, was published by the University of Washington Press.

Mncwabe was married and a father of five children.

His funeral takes place at 9 am tomorrow. Mourners will thereafter proceed to the Ethembeni Cemetery in Lincoln Meade.
