Obituary: David Kettley

2008-10-22 00:00

Retired city businessman David Kettley died yesterday after a long illness.

Kettley (79), an insurance broker, was founder president of the Pietermaritzburg Toastmasters Club and a longstanding member of the Rotary Club and the Jacyees.

In 2003, Kettley had a brush with death after he was left for dead in his Boom Street house by robbers. He spent almost two months in a coma, but recovered and returned to work, running Anglo Insurance Brokers. He celebrated his 75th birthday at a party with friends.

Family said then that it was the second time he had survived an assault, having been badly beaten by burglars about three years before.

Both these attacks took place in the family home at 239 Boom Street, well known for its award-winning garden created by his wife, Lorrainne, who died in 1999.

After Kettley moved out, the house was sold and the new owners opened the Rosehurst Café and preserved the garden.
