Obituary: Emily Ntuli, Unsung struggle heroine

2008-04-18 00:00

UNSUNG South African freedom struggle heroine and peace broker Emily Ntuli, who was a confidante of late ANC leader Harry Gwala, died in Edendale Hospital after a heart attack on April 9.

Ntuli, who will be buried at Entembeni Cemetery in Pietermaritzburg tomorrow, was known and respected as an ANC activist until the late ’90s when she joined the United Democratic Movement (UDM).

“While a member of the then Natal midlands executive committee, Ntuli was popular for participating in a peace deal during the ANC-IFP Seven-Day War in the Edendale area. She also helped broker a peace deal in Impendle,” said Sifiso Bhengu, a former UDM and ANC leader.

Ntuli, who died at the age of 68, joined the UDM while an ANC councillor after the 1996 local government elections. She left the ANC in sympathy for late UDM leader Sifiso Nkabinde, who was expelled from the ANC following spy allegations. After joining the UDM, she ceased being active in politics.

She leaves three daughters, nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Her funeral will take place at Presbyterian Church in Imbali Stage 1 at 10 am.
