Obituary: Mandeni Mayor Nokuthula Shabalala dies after long illness

2012-04-11 00:00

MANDENI local municipality mayor, Lindiwe Nokuthula Shabalala died on Saturday at the age of 41 after being critically ill for some time.

She was inaugurated on June 2 last year. Mandeni’s acting municipal manager, Siyabonga Khanyile said: “It is not easy to accept that we will never see or work with her again, but to honour her legacy we all have to work hard to maintain the standards that she has set.”

Shabalala was the ANC secretary for the inland branch and a leader of Cosatu and Sadtu in the region.

“We are heartbroken. Just when we were ready for her recovery, God decided to take her away from us,” said Shabalala’s bodyguard, Jabulani Biyela. She was a mother to a son and daughter, S’fundo (20) and Sanele (16).

“Her death has really bought us pain, but everyone has their own number of days to live and I guess her time was now,” said her distraught mother, Bajabuliswe Shabalala.

She said she had expected her daughter to become a teacher because of her dedication towards teaching children, but she had not expected her to become a politician.

Shabalala’s memorial service will be held on Thursday at Sibusisiwe Hall at 4 pm and her funeral will be held on Saturday April 14 at 9 am at Ngcedomhlophe Stadium.
