Obituary: Radio station founder and school head Riaz Jamal

2013-03-05 00:00

RIAZ Jamal, the well-known founder of Islamic radio station Radio Al Ansaar, and the principal of South Coast Madressa School in Durban, died at Parklands Hospital in the city in the early hours of yesterday morning after a long illness.

Jamal had been in hospital since December last year.

A senior teacher at South Coast Madressa School, who would not be named, described Jamal as “an extremely hard worker with a warm personality”.

The teacher said Jamal, who joined the school as principal in 2000, had travelled to international conferences to ensure that his knowledge of Islamic education was up to date.

“His dream was to ensure the school had a proper jamaat khanna [prayer facility]. For years we used a carport and Wendy house to pray in at various times. Six years ago he started a project to have a proper facility built and last year, with the help of a few sponsors, that dream came to fruition.”

Radio Al Ansaar station manager Faradh Patel told The Witness that Jamal’s death would be felt by everyone he came into contact with.

“He was one of the founding members of Al Ummah newspaper and magazine. He had a deep passion for community radio and newspapers,” he said.

“He will be missed.”

Jamal’s burial was conducted yesterday in Durban.
