Oh so close for KZN Inland in Paarl

2009-11-16 00:00

IT was so near, yet so far for KZN Inland in Paarl yesterday when they came within a six and a four of winning their first match of the season.

Needing 16 off 18 balls with three wickets in hand in their CSA Provincial Challenge 40-over match against Boland, Inland lost three wickets in nine balls to go down by 10 runs.

For Boland, this win was worth four log points, while Inland were left to reflect on what might have been.

At least the match had something for the Inland men to remember the trip by after the three-dayer was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

Boland, having been put in to bat, were 156 for eight before being let off the hook to recover to a more respectable 183 all out.

Inland’s 173 in response was built around a 37 by opener Tim Drummond and Morné van Vuuren’s 35, while a few more overs of both Glen Addicott and Mbasa Gqadushe would have been enough rope for the visitors to hang the home side with.

Gqadushe blistered 22 in 10 balls, while Addicott’s 22 earlier on didn’t necessitate one trot to the non-bowler’s end as he blasted four fours and a six.

Both innings saw the opening stands rendered useless as Boland lost their first wicket off the last ball of the first over of the innings from Inland blitz-man Ollie Humphries, while the visitors’ sorry opening tale saw Dipak Anand perish for a duck in his side’s third over.

The under-rated seamer Narvaar Harridave was Inland’s top bowler, snaffling four Boland wickets for just 22 runs including two in three deliveries. Spinners Van Vuuren and Kyle Nipper were again more than useful, but it seems the struggling Inland team’s elusive maiden victory of the season will have to wait until at least this weekend, when they tackle lowly Border at the Maritzburg Oval from Thursday to Sunday.

An attempt was made to contact Inland player/coach Doug Watson for comment, but he was unavailable.
