Oil spill: Burst pipeline fixed

2010-06-21 00:00

THE oil pipeline that burst near Estcourt on Friday was back in commission on Saturday night and the area declared safe.

In what was termed a “low probability accident”, Transnet’s New Multi-Product Pipeline (NMPP) carrying crude oil from Durban to Johannesburg was ruptured on Friday afternoon. According to Transet spokesperson John Dludlu the rupture was caused by a worker on a contractor’s construction crew.

“Once the incident had occurred, sophisticated pressure sensors on the pipeline automatically shut down the operation of the pipeline,” said Dludlu.

Emergency repair and spill containment crews were immediately sent to the site and once assessed, the site was made safe and repairs were carried out. “These have now been completed. No major crude oil supply impact to the Natref oil refinery or supply of refined fuels to Gauteng was experienced.”

Farmer Graham McIntosh said yesterday that the contaminated topsoil has been removed. “They cleaned it up very quickly, It … has been well managed.”
