Old rivals meet again

SCHOOLBOY rugby serves up another bruising derby today as Maritzburg College take on old rivals Grey College in Bloemfontein.

The two schools last met in 2008 where Grey recorded a whopping 72-7 win over College before Inter Schools met an untimely end. Six years later the schools meet once again in what promises to be a big clash, as both have had great seasons so far.

College are coming off a 21-20 loss at the hands of Glenwood last weekend and will be hungry to put that memory to rest. They have enjoyed a good season, only losing three games — to Wynberg Boys’ High at the Grey PE festival early in the season and to Glenwood, home and away. College are sitting around 10th place in the schoolboy rankings, while Grey are sitting pretty in the number one spot.

Grey have only been beaten once this season — by their namesake from Port Elizabeth as well as drawing against Monument in April.

They host College in their penultimate game of the season, while the fixture is College’s last hurdle of the 2014 season.

College coach Ryan Strudwick believes his side can get one up over the “Springbok Factory”.

“We have had a good season and will be keen to get over last week’s disappointment. This is our final hurdle this season and expect a hard, physical battle,” he said.

“Knowing that our opposition have been beaten this season helps stamp out the fear factor we normally have when taking them on. We put the same side on the park for the last four matches meaning we have consistency and understand the gameplan required.”

The fixture is one steeped in history as both schools are well over 100 years old. The schools first met in 1940 and have played 18 times since then, with a 45 year gap between that first fixture and their next meeting on the rugby field in 1985. Grey has won 15 games, while College have won twice, most recently in 2005.

Grey will no doubt fancy themselves to win yet another game as they have home ground advantage, but that College fighting spirit is forever burning and their pack is touted to match the quality Grey forwards.

The game kicks of 2.05 pm and will be broadcast on SuperSport Select.
