Old rivals to meet on Goldstone

2011-03-26 00:00

THE second week of the official school rugby season does not find as many schools participating as would be expected: of the major schools, Glenwood, is having trials today while the others will be playing.

The Voortrekker Sports Festival takes place today with rugby, girls’ hockey and netball on the programme.

The festival attracted many of the country’s top schools in the past but, with the proliferation of Easter rugby festivals and the earlier start to the rugby season, the Voortrekker Festival, a week before the Easter break, is unable to attract the bigger schools who are bound to schedule fixtures.

The main match in the midlands takes place on Goldstones at Maritzburg College where the hosts welcome long-standing rivals Durban High School.

College, in their first official match last week, annihilated Voortrekker 81-3, whereas DHS lost 10-28 against Kearsney. Not too much can be read into these results, although College can be certain of facing a sterner test this afternoon.

Two matches in the Highways area will draw a large attendance. Stott field at Kearsney sees Hilton against the home side and Michaelhouse visit Westville.

As mentioned, Kearsney beat DHS last Saturday and earlier had an 18-13 win against George Campbell.

Hilton came through 19-14 against Northwood in a competitive game and last week beat George Campbell 49-17.

Westville will be having their first official outing and are an unknown quantity at this stage, but there are a number of players back from last year. Michaelhouse beat Northwood 29-12 in their only game to date and will be hoping to build on that performance.

The main match at the Voortrekker Festival is between the hosts and St Charles. The latter have not yet played a match, whereas Voortrekker have played two matches, against College and a loss against Kuswag the week before. It should be an evenly contested game.
