‘Oldest’ pair meet up after 10 years to race the Dusi

2011-02-16 00:00

THE E-batch of the Unlimited Dusi Marathon will include a K2 crew of the “oldest” doubles to tackle the 188 km race to Durban.

Hugh Raw (70) and his partner Dickie Edwards (71) have among them competed in 20 marathons and they are ready for this one.

After starting his Dusi career in the 80s, Raw also became an established name in the kayak building and repair business.

The pair completed their first and only Dusi in 2001, the year of the race’s 50th anniversary.

“We were 60 years old when we did our first Dusi together and it was then that we decided we’d do one more together in 10 years’ time. So this, along with that fact that this race is the Pope’s tribute race, led to our entry this year,” said Edwards.

He said he has been privileged to have paddled with Raw, and that no matter how much he swore at him or called him an idiot, he always remained calm.

“His indomitable spirit is incredible, he’s totally invincible, nothing gets in his way … ever. Of course, he’s completely insensitive to my aches and pains and just keeps cracking the whip.”

Raw said they have a simple philosophy that youth and exuberance is no match for their cunning and guile.
