Olympics: Rene Kalmer qualifies at Prague marathon

SOUTH African LJ van Zyl got his international campaign off to a great start when he took the scalp of 2005 World Champion Bershaw Jackson in the 400 m hurdles in the Diamond League in Doha at the weekend.

Van Zyl put in a surge before the final hurdle to break the line in 48,11 seconds. In a tight race for second Cornel Fredericks out-dipped Jackson 48,43 to 48,44 seconds.

In the javelin Johan Oosthuizen launched his spear to 84,38 metres, finishing second to Czech Petr Frydrych and earning a valuable win over topranked Fin Tero Pitkomaki (83,91 m) and Norway’s Andreas Thorkildsen, who could only record a lowly 83,63 metres.

Rene Kalmer joined Tanith Maxwell and Annerien van Schalkwyk with an Olympic qualifying marathon time on Sunday in the Prague 42 km.

Lydia Cheromei of Kenya won the race in a new course record time of 2:22:34 seconds. This was a personal best for the Kenyan who was six minutes clear of Ethiopian Yeshimebet Tadesse (2:28:33) and Belainesh Zemedkun. Kalmer was fourth in 2:34:47 seconds in what was her first major marathon since running the Soweto Marathon. She achieved her goal of making the top five and an Olympic qualification time, and brought home R25 000 for her efforts. Kalmer can go even faster if she would allow more recovery between races. For the first time in over a decade SA has a potential women’s marathon team for World Championships and Olympic Games.

Thubalethu Phaku was the clear victor in the Woodview Starling Plumbers half- marathon which doubled as the KZN championships on Sunday morning. Cary Ann Smith’s domination of the women’s race was even greater, winning in 1:21:20, a kilometre ahead of the pack.
