One dead, 24 injured in KZN accidents yesterday

AT least 600 people have been killed in road accidents across the country since the beginning of the holiday season.

Yesterday, one person was reported killed and 24 injured in three separate accidents in KZN.

Seventeen people were injured, 10 seriously, when a minibus taxi and a double-cab bakkie collided head-on on the M37 near Adams Mission yesterday morning, said Jeff Wicks of Netcare 911.

It is alleged that one of the vehicles veered into the opposite lane as the vehicles negotiated a sharp bend. The bakkie ploughed into the taxi before both vehicles left the road.

The driver and passenger of the bakkie and the 15 occupants of the taxi were injured.

On the N3 Durban-bound carriageway near the Pavilion yesterday afternoon, seven people were injured, one woman seriously, when an out-of-control articulated truck hit five cars

It is alleged that the truck driver lost control of the vehicle when his brakes failed. The truck slammed into the light motor vehicles, causing it to veer from the roadway and overturn.

A motorcyclist was killed when he slammed into a luxury SUV on Alpine Road, Asherville, in Durban, also yesterday afternoon.

The SUV crossed the busy road from a side road and the motorcyclist was unable to stop in time and slammed into the side of the car. Paramedics found the bloodied man lying face down in the middle of the road, said Wicks.

He sustained massive head trauma and died at the scene.
