Oohs and Aahs as Chad takes Melanie to her matric ball

“IT was even more wonderful than I hoped. I felt like a celebrity!”

Melanie Olhaus was still coming down from her high yesterday after going to her matric dance on the arm of Chad le Clos.

There were oohs and aahs when Melanie and Le Clos pulled up at the party venue, the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg, in a convertible car.

Le Clos, clad in a Pierre Cardin suit made specially for the occasion, walked round the car and lifted Melanie out.

Melanie sparkled in a dark blue and gold gown made for her by designer Gert-Johan Coetzee, who was impressed by her boldness in asking Le Clos for a date when he arrived back from the Olympics.

The couple posed for photographers and cellphone-wielding mothers outside.

“Oh, he’s gorgeous,” exclaimed one, while others tried to catch the couple’s attention for snaps.

Melanie said Le Clos was a “real gentleman” and that they had got on well, with no awkward silences.

“We chatted like old friends,” she said. “And he’s a really good dancer.”

Le Clos danced only with Melanie and afterwards accompanied her to two after-parties, dropping her off at home with a hug at about 2 am.

Melanie’s mother, Yolande, said it was exciting to see her daughter on the front pages of the Sunday papers.

Melane said that even though Le Clos and Coetzee had confirmed the plans, she had a niggling feeling the swimming star might not arrive. One of her best friends offered to step in if Le Clos didn’t turn up.

But he did, bearing roses.

Le Clos arrived at her home at about 5 pm, joining family and friends for a pre-party gathering.

A dress fit for the red carpet

“I WANTED to make it look as if she had walked through a river of gold and the golden water was clinging to the blue dress,” said designer Gert-Johan Coetzee.

Coetzee, who has made gowns for celebrities like Kourtney Kardashian, said Melanie was easy to work with. The one-shoulder dress plunged to a low back. “What we tried to do was to make her feel like a real celebrity and I think we achieved that.”

“It’s gorgeous, I’m so happy,” Melanie exclaimed when she looked in the mirror.
