Opportunity of a lifetime

2013-03-05 00:00

A PIETERMARITZBURG actor and musician has been given an opportunity of a lifetime.

Khulekani Zondi, who was involved in the production of the movie Uhlanga — The Mark, has been awarded a film scholarship by the Met Film School in London.

He said he was very excited when he heard the good news in December. “This is going to be a big opportunity,” he told The Witness.

Zondi, who was the director of photography, and did the musical scoring and was a bit of an assistant director in Uhlanga — The Mark, said he applied for the scholarship while they were still working on the movie.

“I applied online to a college in London, and they told me about the fees and I couldn’t afford it. They then told me about the scholarship that they have,” he said.

He said the main criteria was that the film needs to have been in a film festival and had to have gained some sort of accolades.

“I squashed the idea of getting a scholarship, because I didn’t think the movie would go so far. But I told them I really want this,” said Zondi, who studied music at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

His wish came true, as the movie scooped five awards at the Zanzibar International Film Festival last year and was also screened at other international festivals.

Zondi said this made him happy, because his chances of getting the scholarship were good.

“I sent them an e-mail to tell them about the things we had achieved. When I was in London for the Africa Film Festival, I went straight to them and said: ‘I need this. I want this’,” Zondi said.

They sent him an application and called him in December to congratulate him.

The one-year scholarship starts in September this year and runs until September 2014.

Zondi said he wants to use this opportunity to learn as much as he can so that he can come back and tell South African stories.
