Opposition corner Nxesi on his ‘Nkandla blunder’

2014-07-17 00:00

CAPE TOWN — Opposition parties yesterday used the Public Works budget debate to again criticise minister Thulas Nxesi for his handling of the Nkandla scandal.

DA MP Kenneth Mubu said the Nkandla scandal was Nxesi’s biggest blunder in 2013.

He said Nxesi had used excuse after excuse to prevent the departmental task team from making public its report on Nkandla.

He said the DA will ensure the ad hoc committee that had been appointed on the Nkandla issue will be reappointed. The committee was disbanded ahead of the May elections and has not yet been reinstated in the new Parliament. “We cannot allow the president or any minister of his cabinet to evade serious questions on their involvement in one of the country’s biggest scandals,” Mubu said.

IFP MP Petros Sithole also said Nkandla was Nxesi’s biggest blunder.

“The minister is protecting his president and when the public protector issued her report, he was silent.”

Sithole said Nkandla was a blot on Nxesi’s appointment.

Before he delivered his budget speech, Nxesi was also asked why people should listen to his plans to turn around the of Public Works Department if he could not even handle the Nkandla issue. Nxesi said nothing was being kept secret. “There were several investigations, people and companies were identified and action was taken,” Nxesi said. — Media24.
