Oribi Gorge: setting for sexual thriller

2011-08-20 00:00

ALISTAIR Morgan’s South African thriller Sleeper’s Wake is being turned into a full-length feature film to be set in Port Edward on South Coast and in Johannesburg.

Principal photography for the film, which is being produced by Bioskope Pictures and Durban-based Videovision Entertainment and marks director Barry Berk’s feature film debut, began earlier this week.

Berk, who wrote the screenplay for Sleeper’s Wake, has previously directed episodes of the British series Wild At Heart and the South African dramas The Lab, Gaz Lam and Yizo Yizo.

His made-for-television film, T he Good Provider, won the best family drama prize at the Banff World Television Festival in 2006 and received nine nominations at the South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas).

A sexual thriller, Sleeper’s Wake tells the story of a recently widowed man who takes refuge in a small coastal town to heal his grief, only to get caught up in a dangerous relationship with a beautiful young woman.

Said Ken Kaplan of Bioskope Pictures, “The incredible locations available on the South Coast and at Oribi Gorge are more than amazing backdrops for the setting of Sleeper’s Wake. The natural beauty of the area will be one of the stars of this suspense drama. As an all-South African production we are pleased to be showcasing one of the most beautiful parts of our country,” — Arts Editor.
