Oscar team to negotiate

2013-08-21 00:00

ADVOCATE Dup de Bruyn for the Steenkamp family yesterday confirmed that the Oscar Pistorius legal team was negotiating to settle the Steenkamps’ civil claim against Pistorius out of court.

He did not want to expand on reports that the family was suing Pistorius for R3 million.

The civil claim is allegedly tied to damages and compensation for loss of income because Reeva Steenkamp had supported her patents financially.

Advocate Kenny Oldwage for Pistorius said the paralympic athlete had a large legal team and he was not personally involved in “those talks”.

Oldwage said he therefore could not comment at all, and referred all queries to Brian Webber, the instructing attorney of Pistorius’s legal team, but he could not be reached for comment.

Other media reports, that the police were investigating Pistorius’s finances because investigators had allegedly found that he had not declared all of his income, could not be confirmed.

Adrian Lackay, spokesperson for the South African Revenue Services (SARS), said all queries must be directed to the police and the National Prosecution Authority (NPA), because they were investigating the Pistorius case. Lackay said SARS was not a complainant in the murder case against Pistorius and could, therefore, not comment.

The NPA referred all queries in regard with the alleged financial investigation back to the police, but Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant General Solomon Makgale said he did not know where the rumours came from and that he did not want to comment on them.

Makgale said the police team had investigated “the death of Reeva Steenkamp, nothing more”.
