Outage in Hilton due to repairs

2013-06-28 00:00

HILTON residents woke up in the early hours of yesterday morning to find the electricity was off once again.

On the Hilton Ratepayers’ Association Facebook group page, residents had been posting reports of hearing an explosion before the outage.

However, DA ward six councillor Craig Millar said that Msunduzi Municipality had turned off the sub-stations for repairs. He said power was restored to the business area at 8.30 am.

DA ward councillor for ward seven, Pam Passmoor, said that she experienced the power outage when she woke up at about 6 am. However, the power came back on at about 8 am. “It appeared to be the whole area of Hilton as my husband went to work at 7 am and saw that the power was out as he was passing from Hilton Gardens to Crossways. This is a problem, but these things happen,” said Passmoor.

Municipal spokesperson Brian Zuma said a mini-sub-station in Hilton faulted, resulting in the power tripping and causing an outage.

“The 33kv powerline upgrade in Hilton/Sweetwaters area is nearing completion. We are expecting that power outages will be a thing of the past once the second line is complete,” said Zuma.

Meanwhile, in Pietermaritzburg, some areas were in the dark last night after a fire at an electricity distribution box in Royston Road.
