Outage was ‘final straw’ for Remax

2014-03-07 00:00

YESTERDAY’S power outage was the final straw for estate agency Remax Midlands, based in the Pietermaritzburg CBD.

Without power since Monday after electricity cables were stolen in Peter Kerchhoff Street, Remax has been struggling to do business.

When the power was eventually reconnected, it was excessive and resulted in power surges that damaged equipment.

Agency owner Pelham Henwood said he had never experienced such an incident in 40 years in business.

“On Sunday, they stole our electrical wires from the sub-station, so we had no electricity on Monday at all, and no phones as it seems like the Telkom lines were also damaged.

“Then on Tuesday we got electricity back, but the surge blew everything. And now we have no computers, no telephones, no fax, no copiers, nothing!

“On Wednesday, we eventually managed to get some electricity and now on Thursday this Eskom power outage,” said Henwood.

He said this meant the business could not do banking, make payments or collect payments.

“People think we have skipped the country and are screaming for their money. It is insane.

“I cannot begin to estimate the loss we have suffered,” said Henwood.
