Outrage over cop assaults

2014-09-23 00:00

A POLICE officer, entertaining a woman in a car in someone else’s driveway, allegedly shot the homeowner who demanded that he move the car.

Gary Perumal was shot in his left thigh a week ago on Saturday afternoon outside his home on Burger Street.

One of Perumal’s neighbours who arrived after the shooting confirmed the shooter was a police officer.

Perumal said he came home to find the officer parked in his driveway, fondling a woman.

“I approached the passenger’s side and inside there was a woman, her dress was raised … I asked him to move his car so I could get into my house.”

While waiting for his wife to open the gate — his gate only opens from the inside — he turned around and found the officer standing behind him.

“He pulled out his gun and cocked it. I went to my car and pulled out my bush knife and told him, ‘Listen my friend, I have a family here’. He started retreating and I was trying to guide him away from the gate because my wife was there and my children were playing in line with the gate.”

He said the officer shouted at the woman in the car to bring his cellphone.

“He spoke on his phone, saying ‘Captain what I should do’ … My wife got in front of me and said, ‘Why do you want to shoot my husband?’”

Perumal said, “He shot me in the leg and I fell down … He released the gun clip and pulled out more bullets from his pocket and loaded them to the clip, he was planning to shoot me again …

“I was 10 to 12 metres away from him, so he cannot claim self defence.

“This has traumatised me, and I am now going for counselling,” he continued.

By late yesterday, the police said they were looking for information on the incident.

Perumal has opened a police case.

10111 complaints

SHEENA Perumal was scathing of the 10111 services.

Perumal said during the confrontation between her husband and the police officer, she called the line at least four times, and each time her call was ignored or cut.

“I called the first time and the call was cut, I called again and the man on the other line dropped the call, and when I finally spoke to a guy and explained my story, he said I had not spoken to him earlier and he too dropped the call. I called the number four times.”
