Outsiders to probe Roadlink bus blaze

2010-03-24 00:00

SA Roadlink has tasked independent investigators to determine the cause of the fire that gutted a passenger bus on the N3 on Monday.

The 68 passengers and two crew members were unharmed and managed to get off the bus, which caught fire and burnt to a shell. Every piece of luggage was destroyed.

“At this stage we simply cannot say what happened,” said Roadlink spokeswoman Lumka Oliphant.

“It is being investigated thoroughly, but we do not know how long the investigation will take.”

Oliphant said passengers who lost important documents were assisted by the bus company yesterday.

“We tried to consider the things our passengers would need immediately like ID books. We have taken them to Home Affairs to sort these things out,” she said.

One passenger, who is scheduled to return to the United States soon, lost his passport and all travel documentation in the blaze. “We have been in touch with the U.S. Embassy, who have assured us the passenger will have proper documentation in time.”

Asked if SA Roadlink will replace destroyed luggage or reimburse passengers, Oliphant said, “We have asked them to fill out a form detailing what was in the luggage, and we are in the process of seeing what was lost.”
