AN underwater photograph and one depicting an exuberant group of youngsters were selected the best in their categories in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park’s Sodwana Bay Shoot-out.

The photography competition, together with the Supa-Race events, were held at the World Heritage site’s coastal jewel, Sodwana Bay, during September. This festival is part of the park’s annual Eco-Series events.

The festival, which ran from September 25 to September 28, saw over 60 photographers participate in the 14th annual photographic competition that for the second year included a category for land-based images.

The contest recognised competitors at various skill levels, from novice through to advanced and professional entrants. The entrants once again delivered outstanding images that highlighted the magic of the underwater world on the coral reefs in Sodwana Bay.

Hendrik Louw, one of the competition judges and chairman of the Richards Bay-based Beachcomber Photographic Club, said: “This is my first year of involvement with this event and I am impressed by the overall standard of images submitted. A real sense of creative thought, passion for the subject matter and commitment was evident. This event has huge potential to grow into a multi-national event, producing outstanding photography.”

“The competition this year was a resounding success,” said Brian Ring, chairman of the organising committee.

“It could not have taken place without the generous sponsors, with over R350 000 worth of prizes donated. We also raised R5 400 towards the iSimangaliso rare and endangered species fund, while over R8 000 was spent with local community business owners.”

iSimangaliso commercial director Terri Castis said the park is many things to many people. “Events such as these offer an opportunity to showcase the park and its unique attributes to different audiences. We look forward to this event becoming even more popular in years to come.”
