Over 200 jobless graduates recruited

MORE than 200 unemployed graduates from all corners of KwaZulu-Natal gathered at Cedara Agricultural College last week where they were officially welcomed by the MEC for Agriculture, Environmental Affairs and Rural Development, Lydia Johnson.

They have been recruited to bridge a gap in the department’s extension recovery plan as assistants to extension officers.

“These graduates are highly skilled professionals with qualifications in agriculture and have been recruited in line with the objectives of the extension recovery plan,”said Johnson.

“We have a budget which will cater for these young people as they enter into our two-year sustainable programme.”

She said the department encourages the graduates to work in the rural areas where they come from, which is in line with the government’s plan to implement development in rural areas.

Graduate Nonhlanhla Lamula said, “I am extremely happy to get this opportunity, because I have been at home without employment for the past three years.”

Lamula has a three-year diploma from Owen Sithole College of Agriculture.

“My skills will come in handy back home, Nkandla, where I can help my community with my services as assistant extension officer,” she said.
