Overload: Illegal connections blamed for transformer bursting into flames

2010-01-13 00:00

AN electricity transformer box exploded at the corner of Burger and Masukwana (East) streets yesterday evening.

It is suspected that illegal electric connections by residents of the Masukwana settlement in Masukwana Street sparked the explosion.

A firefighter who declined to be named said when they approached the box it was still producing sparks, but they could not tell what the cause of the fire was.

Mohammed Farouk, a resident in the area, said it was not the first time that the box has exploded.

He accused residents of the Masukwana settlement of stealing electricity, damaging municipal property in the process.

“When we tell these people to stop what they are doing they threaten us. If we report the matter to the police we are told to report at the municipality,” Farouk said.

A municipal employee who also declined to be named said they could not tell the cause of the explosion as the box had burnt to ashes.

He said it would only be today that staff would be able to tell the cause of the fire.

The fire did not cause a black-out in the immediate area.
