PMB Business: healthy growth for wellness clinic

2008-05-19 00:00

The expansion of a beauty and wellness business based in the heart of Pietermaritzburg’s CBD is a prime example of the exciting growth phases experienced by small and medium enterprises (SMEs) across the city.

Ekhaya Beauty Professionals, which is currently undergoing a makeover of its own, is owned by Mabongi Mthethwa. It is largely through her efforts as an entrepreneur that the business has grown to this extent. After starting out with a single room, Ekhaya now boasts individual rooms for facials, massages and pedicures among other facilities.

Mthethwa also acquired new equipment during the expansion.

A Pietermaritzburg teacher who was trained in beauty and wellness in the UK and gained experience in this field during her time abroad, Mthethwa established Ekhaya in 2005.

The business has grown tremendously and the expansion has meant that Ekhaya now also boasts a day spa.

She is also in the process of establishing a small training academy on the premises.

"The growth in demand has been impressive and I needed more privacy and space for my clients. Also, young people are interested in being trained in beauty techniques. Many young black women, those that are employed and students, are now clients," Mthethwa said.
