PMB Collegians and Impi dish up a superb match

2014-06-26 00:00

THE Maritzburg Collegians first XV were full value for their 36-19 defeat of University of KwaZulu-Natal Impi after leading 17-14 at half-time in a superb Fidelity Security Premier Division club rugby match on the Pietermaritzburg campus last weekend.

In so doing, Collegians have won the coveted PMB Derby Cup this year and it has been the first time in 12 years that the red, black and white have won twice at both first and second team level against the student-based club.

The quality of rugby belied the fact that these two sides, Collegians and Impi, are sixth and seventh on the eight-team log as the quality of the tries — most from well-constructed attacking plays, not through soft errors by the opposition — showed the standard of coaching they are receiving from Carel Nel and Matt Reed respectively.

The high level of the rugby moved former Midlands rugby Sub-Union president Hennie Laatz, who was also a long-serving member of the KZN Rugby Union executive, to say that club rugby in the KZN capital is certainly on the rise.

Indeed, the surfeit of quite brilliant running rugby mixed with solid scrummaging and lineout play brought up the topic of whether Pietermaritzburg would not be better served by having a “super club” consisting of the amalgamation of Varsity and Collegians at provincial level, which would generate a team capable of challenging the best that Durban has to offer in a genuinely serious manner.

Of course, that may be but a dream, although the suggestions made a lot of sense after watching two outstanding teams at the Peter Booysen Sports Park.

Tomorrow will be a jolt back to the real world when PMB Collegians host perennial champs College Rovers at 8.30 pm on Woodburn’s number two field and the Impi travel to Durban North and a date with third-placed Crusaders at the same start time.
