PMB-DBN train coming in 2015

THE long-awaited KZN Business Express is expected to be ready by March next year.

But if this deadline is met, it would be a year later than originally promised and still the shuttle operators are uncertain how much it would cost commuters.

Despite an anticipated R50 million to be spent on the upgrade of 12 carriages expected to carry 350 people, the journey between the two centres — normally an hour by car — will take two hours by train.

Chief executive officer of Prasa Rail, Mosenngwa Mofi, said the express aims to provide alternative transport to government workers and the business sector.

“We found that many people commute from Durban to Pietermaritzburg daily and vice versa.

“As Prasa it is our duty to provide a safer and cheaper alternative to roads and these people are able to conduct their work while on the way to Pietermaritzburg,” he said.

The train will offer free WiFi, charging ports and hostess service.

Mofi said they are working to shorten the travel time before the launch.

“The network is run by Transnet who carry freight so they are working to improve them so we can travel at higher speeds, which would result in shorter travelling time,” he said.

The express can also host conferences in a carriage with specifically dedicated facilities.
