PMB Sports: Maritzburg United fighting for a PSL promotion at Harry Gwala tomorrow

2008-04-03 00:00

TOMORROW is crunch time for Maritzburg United in their quest to bounce back to the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

United, who were relegated from the PSL last season, are currently in second place in the National First Division (NFD) Coastal Stream on 41 points.

They play their second-to-last game of the stream against leaders Bay United (42 points) at Harry Gwala Stadium tomorrow (3 pm) in the game that is sure to decide which team goes through to the NFD final to play for one automatic promotion place to the PSL.

Tomorrow’s game has been described by United chairman Farouk Kadodia as “the biggest in our history so far”. The club have decided to allow free entrance to the ground, except for the grand stand, which is R20.

The Msunduzi Council has sponsored 15 buses to bring fans in from townships with pick-up venues including Ashdown Stadium, France Sports Ground, Wadley Stadium and Sobantu Hall.

The council has also sponsored Maritzburg United T-shirts for the first 1 000 fans at the ground, while Colgate Palmolive has sponsored a further 500.

If United lose against Bay, all is not lost. The team have already qualified for the play-offs, where the Coastal and Inland runners-up, losers of the NFD final and second-last PSL team play for one promotion place to the PSL.
