PMB Varsity get their act together

2011-05-26 00:00

THE reigning KZN Men’s Super League champions, Maritzburg Varsity, got their title defence back on track with a comprehensive victory over the weekend.

A Karl Oftebro hat trick, and a brace apiece from Geoff Abbott and Duzo Khanyile, led the way in defending champions Maritzburg Varsity’s 11-1 win over Riverside II.

Varsity’s Jethro Eustice told The Witness that the campus-based side’s performance was much improved on the disappointing 1-1 draw with Durban Varsity II in the opening round.

“We distributed the ball well, our penalty corners were effective and a measure of the side’s cohesiveness were the number of tap-ins at the far post,” said the KZN Inland central defender.

PMB Collegians were 4-0 down after 16 minutes against an on-song Durban Varsity in what was an eventual 10-1 defeat.

A big game in Durban saw the Wade Paton-led Rovers do well to draw 2-2 with the starstudded Riverside line-up. A Jared Mitchell penalty stroke in the last minute gave Rovers a share of the points. Keagan Eccles and Michael Botha scored for Riverside with the other Rovers goal going to Mitchell’s former Maritzburg College team-mate Andrew Manson.

The KZN Women’s Super League saw a local derby between PMB Varsity and PMB Collegians. Varsity won 2-0 with Sian Eustice catching the eye.

Despite the outstanding work of Collegians’ Robyn Pearson and Lyndal Robertson, Varsity dominated. A key women’s Super League match saw the Lennie Botha-coached Rovers beat Durban Varsity 2-0, thanks to goals from national caps Cindy Botha and Kara Stella.

In this week’s programme, and from a KZN Inland local derby perspective, the scheduled Super League men’s encounter between PMB Varsity and PMB Collegians, which is scheduled for Sunday, is worth a watch. The time and venue have yet to be announced. Two key matches in Durban see Durban Varsity tackling Rovers and Riverside hosting Pinetown.

The PMB Collegians and Varsity women have tough matches against Rovers and Durban Collegians, respectively, while the match of the day sees Durban Varsity taking on Riverside.

Meanwhile, Midlands won all four sections in the Country Districts Quadrangular held in PMB and have the lion’s share of players selected for the KZN Inland Country Districts men’s and women’s sides for the annual SA Country Districts interprovincial tournaments.
