PMB airport: Airlink announces more, cheaper daily flights

2011-02-22 00:00

IN an effort to improve services at the Pietermaritzburg Airport, Airlink yesterday announced a new flight schedule featuring twice as many daily jet flights at cheaper fares.

From next Monday, a new passenger jet flight will depart from Johannesburg at 6 am and arrive in Pietermaritzburg at 7am, with the return flight leaving at 7.30 am and arriving in Johannesburg at 8.30 am, Airlink’s marketing and sales manager, Karin Murray, said yesterday.

The afternoon jet flight will leave Johannesburg at 5 pm, arriving in Pietermaritzburg at 6 pm, and return from the city at 6.30 pm, arriving in Johannesburg at 7.30 pm.

Airlink will operate two additional return flights during the day, a mid-morning return flight and a mid-afternoon return flight, to cater for inbound and outbound connecting passengers travelling onwards from Johannesburg to other African and international destinations, Murray said.

This will be done in conjunction with Airlink’s alliance partner, South African Airways, and its Star Alliance partner airlines worldwide.

“The use of a modern, highly efficient AVRO RJ 83-seat quad-jet aircraft has allowed Airlink to offer competitive fares starting from R450 one way all inclusive.

“Terms and conditions will obviously apply, in line with normal airline practice.”

Murray said the significant investment by the Msunduzi Municipality and Airlink in the implementation of enhanced runway lighting and the development of the global navigational satellite system approach procedure has allowed for improved operational reliability.

“… So whereas passengers were historically justifiably concerned about the possible disruption of their schedules [due to weather], they can confidently choose to use Pietermaritzburg in the comfort that scheduled air services here are now more reliable than ever,” she said.
