PMB club rugby sides score valuable wins ahead of Derby Cup clash

2012-06-20 00:00

THERE was much cheer in club rugby circles in the capital at the weekend when the two Pietermaritzburg teams in the KZN Premier Division — Collegians and Varsity — emerged with valuable victories.

At Woodburn, PMB Collegians picked up five vital points in beating Zululand Rhinos 37-19, while in Durban a depleted Maritzburg Varsity displayed remarkable resilience in upsetting Crusaders’ family day with a hard-fought 24-18 win.

Both sides will go into Saturday’s

3 pm PMB Derby Cup clash at Woodburn full of confidence. Varsity will be intent on retaining the trophy after their hard-fought win at home in the first round, while Collegians will be looking for revenge.

There is a R10 entrance fee in aid of purchasing a generator for Woodburn, so it’s for a good cause. With no school rugby the Midlands Rugby Sub-Union hopes to see lots of youngsters in the crowd.

At Woodburn it was a must-win for Collegians and the Rhinos in this bottom-table clash, as the matches are only going to get more challenging as the second round progresses.

Collegians went into the clash on five points after eight matches with Rhinos on six after seven.

Towards the end of the first quarter, Rhinos went 7-3 up, but Collegians were 30-7. However, the red, black and white took their foot off the pedal and the spirited Zululanders clawed back to 30-19 until Collegians found their spark with replacement Henkie Groenewald’s try at the death.

Collegians flyhalf Conal Levin was immaculate, his 22-point harvest including a full-house four conversions, plus three penalty goals and one try. Collegians’ other tries went to outstanding centre Mfundo Magubane and hooker Dylan Pieterse.

Ball carrier, captain and inside centre Rikus Janse van Rensburg also stood out, as did Collegians’ outstanding flank Craig English, aggressive lock forward Jean Vosloo, fetcher and flank Justin Smith and nippy number nine Brendon Fourie.

Rhinos’ tries came from Martin Stander, Johan de Kock and flyhalf Sello Sekhyala, who also kicked two conversions.

In Durban North, Varsity head coach Shawn van Rensburg was forced to have another outing in the forwards in his injury-stricken side.

His decade of experience as a professional was invaluable in controlling the tempo of the game as the campus-based club found yet more heroes against the likes of rampaging Sharks and Springbok flank Jean Deysel, Sharks scrumhalf Conrad Hoffman, former Sharks goalkicking ace Monty Dumond and a number of overseas imports.

Dredging up strength from a battered and bruised body, cauliflower ears bleeding, Van Rensburg was just one of the Whites who showed true Varsity spirit in this remarkable win.

“We go into Saturday’s PMB Derby Cup match against Collegians looking for back-to-back victories, but after their win over Rhinos and our tough first-round victory we won’t be taking them lightly,” an upbeat Van Rensburg told The Witness yesterday.

“We are confident, but have great respect for Collegians and it should be another fantastic match.”

Saturday at Woodburn sees eight matches while after the rugby, a beer tent will be the venue for screening the Springboks versus England third Test and various entertainment.

Clubs taking part in the matches that kick off at 1.30 pm are Varsity, Collegians, PMB Waratahs, Jaguars, Midlands U20, Crusaders U20, Voortrekker Old Boys, Nagle Dam Rhinos, Howick Eagles and Cedara.

Entrance to Woodburn is only from Woodhouse Road due to the road works in Boshoff Street.
