PMB clubs get stick from coastal rivals

2011-05-20 00:00

IT was not a good first round for the KZN capital’s top hockey teams as the Maritzburg Varsity women and both PMB Collegians sides lost in KZN Super League action in Durban.

The lone side that earned a point was reigning KZN Men’s Super League champions PMB Varsity, but their 1-1 draw with Durban Varsity II at Queensmead could be seen by some as a defeat in terms of the damage it might do towards their title defence aspirations.

The champions’ tough encounter is better understood considering the quality of the Durban Varsity second team players, including SA U19 midfielder Sumanth Sunkari and Michael Wiggett, Ross Hetem and Mario Lopes.

At Riverside in Durban North, the young PMB Collegians women’s team, coached by experienced player Lyndal Robertson, put up a fight and were level 1-1 with the strong Durban Collegians squad at the changeover through a goal from 16-year-old St Anne’s prospect Katie Polkinghorne.

Quick running and the experience in the Durban side ensured a 4-1 victory for the coastal girls. PMB Collegians’ players of the match were St Anne’s schoolgirl Paige Phillips and KZN Inland U21 player Vanda Papenfus, while Durban Collegians’ Kerry Gaze netted once.

The big KZN Men’s Super League clash at Queensmead in Durban on Sunday sees Rovers up against Riverside at 12.30 pm, preceded by a key women’s encounter between Durban Varsity and Rovers at 11 am.

Meanwhile, the KZN Inland Hockey Association are holding a Golf Day tomorrow at Maritzburg Golf Club. The four-ball better-ball tees off from 10.15 am to 12.30 pm with the prizegiving at 6 pm.
